Blackstone Nusa Dua is one of many reef breaks you can find in the surrounding Nusa Dua area. Not far from some of the many other expert level reef breaks, Blackstone tends to be a little bit more manageable for beginner and intermediate surfers. Blackstone gets its name from a protruding chunk of black basalt exposed to the north of the reef’s long point. Don’t expect to paddle out at low tide as the reef tends to be left high and dry except during high tides with a decent swell. Conveniently located near a variety of breaks in the area, Blackstone is a great place to add to your list of breaks for your next surf trip to Bali.
Blackstone tends to be a mushy wave held in sharp contrast to some of its steep and barreling neighbors. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t expect the occasional hollow session during the peak wet season. On large swells, it can be tough to judge just how steep and hollow the take-off is due to a long paddle out. A bounce back from the point can help the wave to bowl out with a steep open shoulder great for aerials. That being said, Blackstone is also a great wave for beginners and sometimes fills in with learner surfers. The beginners often sit far inside on the higher tides so they don’t wash up over the falls onto exposed reef and broken urchin spines. When paddling back out to the peak, keep your eye out for a gap in the line-up leading to a small beach off of the point. This is your ideal get-in spot unless your keen for a long paddle out, and back.
